The Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment Board is pleased to offer scholarships totalling $20,000.00 to 
Post Graduate Tertiary Students 

 2024 applications are now CLOSED

Application is by online form only.

These scholarships are offered to students specialising in study in the following areas:
  • Māori Education
  • Tikanga me te reo Māori
  • Māori Health
  • Māori social and economic development including Maori leader and entrepreneurship
Applicants for these scholarships:

- Will be enrolled in either postgraduate research programmes of study at a recognised Tertiary Institution at either Masters or Doctoral level. 

- Applicants will be engaged in a FULL time capacity in either a Masters Dissertation or Thesis or similar research project, or a Doctoral Thesis research project.  

- Applications must demonstrate tangible outcomes and benefits to Ngati Whakaue - Te Arawa iwi (with specific relation to Māori education, Māori Health, Tikanga me te reo Māori and Māori economic development including Māori leadership.  
 
  • Successful applicants will be required to present a summary of their research project to the Board and include recommendations that could be adopted as next steps to take the research outcomes into practical and tangible solutions. 
 
Priority will be given to applicants who  (including legally adopted children):

- Are Ngati Whakaue descendants of an original owner in the Pukeroa Oruawhata block (view list of owners)
- Are Ngati Whakaue descendants of one or more of the 6 Koromatua of Ngati Whakaue (view list)
      Whangai will be considered in terms of the Board's Whakapapa Policy (2015).
- Are members of the other related hapu/iwi of Ngati Whakaue who reside in the Lake Rotorua basin.
- Are currently participating in the governance or management of existing Ngati Whakaue organisations or who plan to do so in the next three to five years.

Funds available will be distributed by way of
  • (example) Two scholarships of up to $10,000 each; Note: The distribution of funds may differ from that stipulated.  
  • Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment reserves the right to determine the scholarship distribution method including the right not to distribute scholarships dependent upon the quality of scholarship applications.
  • Payments of these scholarships will be by way of a one off seeding grant followed by a progress payment/s according to a successful project milestone (contracted) reporting process.
  • Ngati Whakaue reserves the right to use information collected for research purposes.

  • If you have received or applied for a Tertiary grant this year, you may still apply for a Scholarship.  If you are selected for a Scholarship this will be taken into account, but you are not precluded from applying.
  • Successful applicants will not be eligible to receive a tertiary grant, while in receipt of the PostGraduate Scholarship.  
  • Successful applicants will not be eligible for this scholarship in successive years.

  • Scholarship recipients are required to complete set milestones.  The Board may at is discretion approve a deferment of a milestone report but reserves the right to recall monies already paid and/or cancel further payments for non-submission.

3.  Save & Resume:    Use the ‘save my progress and resume later’ button at top of your form (the form does not save automatically).  

4.  Document upload section: You are required to upload the following documents to support your application.  You will NOT be able to submit your application without these documents.

  • Verified Whakapapa Sheet (if your Whakapapa has not already been confirmed against your login details).
  • Enrolment Confirmation
  • Fees Receipt
  • Previous Results
  • Letter from Primary Research Supervisor (letter of support on e.g. research capabilities, progress, timeframes)
  • Ethics Approval (if applicable)
  • Student ID
  • Bank Deposit Slip (pre-printed or bank certified)

Secondary School Boarding Hostel Scholarship

PURPOSE:
To support up to TWO Ngati Whakaue students who are in a Secondary School Boarding Hostel within the boundaries of Te Arawa – mai i Maketu ki Tongariro.

SCHOLARSHIPS:
Up to TWO Ngati Whakaue scholarships will be available, at $5,000 each.

The Scholarship will be awarded for ONE year only.

The Scholarship can only be received ONCE.  Successful recipients will not be eligible to apply again in subsequent years.

Eligibility:

  1. The applicant student to be enrolled in Year 9 or above, at a recognised Secondary school boarding hostel, within the boundaries of Te Arawa – mai i Maketu ki Tongariro. as a full-time boarding student.  

  2. Applicants (including legally adopted children) must Whakapapa to either an original owner of Pukeroa Oruawhata or, to one the 6 Koromatua o Ngati Whakaue. Whangai will be considered in terms of the Board’s Whakapapa Policy (2015) Number 0611.
    Verification of whakapapa is essential for consideration of a grant.    You will be required to upload your verified whakapapa sheet (see below).   

 

APPLICATIONS process and REQUIREMENTS:

The applicant student or whanau must apply using the online application form, and provide and upload:

  • Personal details as required in the application.
  • Verified whakapapa
  • Letter from applicant/whanau, outlining their reasons for wanting to attend the school they have chosen.

 The expectation is that applications will come from whanau in need of the support (as determined at the Board’s discretion).

  • Current CV (of student) and two References/referees.
  • Letter of Endorsement from Hostel Director of Board.
  • Letter of Endorsement from the School Principal.
  • Evidence of total costs for annual boarding fees.
  • School/Hostel bank account details and evidence.

Haane Te Rauawa Manahi – 28.9.1913 to 29.3.1986

Lance Sergeant Haane Manahi was a member of the 28th Maori Battalion, part of the second New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War II. He distinguished himself during the last months of the North African campaign in the bloody battle for Takrouna, a fortified citadel in Tunisia. He led his platoon of men up the 300-metre limestone outcrop through heavy machine gun and mortar fire, making the journey twice more over three days of fighting. The battle for Takrouna was won by the 23rd of April 1943 leaving one more task for Manahi: the retrieval of the bodies of his fallen comrades, friends and whanau. (extract from Rotorua Museum).

PURPOSE: This scholarship is established to assist Ngati Whakaue students and/or apprentices undertaking study, or an apprenticeship, cadetship, traineeship, that specialises in either forestry, farming, trades or service industries. 
Examples of apprenticeship, study, cadetship, traineeship are as follows:
Forestry - Saw Doctor, Timber Machinist, Wood Manufacturing
Farming - Sharemilking, Horticulture, Agriculture
Building - Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Joinery, Communications
Engineering - Fitting & Turning, Welding
Automotive Engineering - Motorcycle Mechanic, Small Engine Mechanic/Technician, Auto Electrical, Automotive Machinist
Service - Hairdressing, Pharmacy, Hospitality, Tourism, Travel
Food - Chef, Seafood, Butchery, Catering

 

Applications are invited from:
-  Ngati Whakaue descendants of an Original Owner in the Pukeroa Oruawhata Block or,
-  Descendants of one or more of the 6 Koromatua of Ngati Whakaue 

 

Applicants must (preferably) be residents in the Rotorua District and must have attended for at least two academic years, one of the following secondary schools in the Rotorua District:
- Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Koutu  -Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Ruamata
- Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Hurunga te Rangi - Western Heights High School
- Rotorua Girls High School  - Rotorua Boys High School
- Rotorua Lakes High School - John Paul College
- Reporoa College - Te Puke High School
- Te Wharekura o Ngati Rongomai   
 
Criteria for selection:

Applications are invited from Ngati Whakaue affiliates who are undertaking an approved programme of study and/or apprenticeship preferably in the Rotorua district with an accredited Industry Training Organisation (ITO) or an accredited Education Provider where training and assessment is provided for a National (or local) Certificate/Diploma/Degree in the chosen vocation. 

Applications will be considered based on:

   - Initiative, attitude and motivation to succeed in their programme of study/apprenticeship.
   - Commitment to whanau, hapu, iwi and community including cultural involvement.
   - Applicants may be in first or subsequent year/s of their study/apprenticeship.  (Any approved scholarship will not be available retrospectively, i.e. only from year of application).

 

  General Information, Terms and Requirements on Scholarship allocations:

  • The Board may award up to four annual scholarships not exceeding $20,000 in total, to cover unfunded course fees, required tools of trade for training purposes or other expenses at the discretion of the Board.
  • Applicants will be required to provide quotes for tools and confirmation for their employer that such tools are appropriate for their apprenticeship. Payments for tools will be made direct to the supplier.
  • Written reports are required on the scholarship awardee’s progress before any consideration will be given for further scholarship instalments.
  • The Board may award scholarships for up to three consecutive years for any individual awardee.

The Board may impose any terms or conditions or requirements for any scholarship at its discretion.

Continuing this successful 2-year initiative, the Pukeroa Oruawhata Trust in conjunction with the Ngāti Whakaue Education Endowment Trust Board are delighted to be able to offer 4 Ngāti Whakaue Rangatahi Golf Scholarships.

The successful applicants will already be golfers who demonstrate some promise but who may not have the resource/training to assist with progressing their game further to a representative level. 

The Scholarship will apply for 2 years and comprise a package of benefits that will include payment of golf subscriptions, individual and group coaching sessions with a highly experienced and qualified PGA Coach, and golf attire.

GRANT CRITERIA
1Year of Study:
Applicants must be in 2nd year (level 2 papers) or higher of their current continued programme of study (Postgraduate study is continued study so cumulative years, as long as directly connected to undergraduate study)
If you are NOT in your second year or higher of your programme of study you will NOT be eligible for a grant. Certificates (equivalent to 1 year or less study, whether full time or part time over 2 years) are not eligible for grants.

2.  Whakapapa:
The Board will recognise only those applicants (including legally adopted children) who are Ngati Whakaue descendant of one of the original owners in Pukeroa Oruawhata Block (»view list of owners) OR descendant of one or more of the 6 koromatua o Ngati Whakaue (»view list of koromatua).  Whangai will be considered in terms of the Board's Whakapapa Policy (2015) No. 0611.
Whakapapa Sheet must be verified (signed) as per instructions on sheet, and must clearly show connection to person for whom grant is being applied.

3.  Marae Validation:
Students are to state their connection to one of Ngati Whakaue Marae as listed (click here to view) and to obtain the signature of one of the Marae trustees. If you are unable to validate your connection to one of the Marae you may not be eligible to receive a grant.

Provided you use your existing login, students who have received a grant since 2012 will not be asked to provide their completed Whakapapa/Marae verification sheet.

4.  Grants are NOT available for FREE courses (i.e. programmes incurring no course fee).

5.  Postgraduate students:  If you are considering applying for the PostGraduate Scholarship you should still apply for a Tertiary grant.
     Note:  Current recipients of a Postgraduate Scholarship are not eligible for a tertiary grant (while in receipt of the scholarship).

Important information for ALL APPLICANTS
   

NWEETB has entered into combined funding arrangements with Maori Education Trust (MET). Students eligible for NWEETB grants may benefit from additional support by way of the JV with MET, along with tripartite arrangements with Victoria University (see below), and also with Massey University.  These additional allocations will vary from year to year and will be dependent on budget and number of applications.

Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment Trust Board are proud Taihonoa Partners of  Te Herenga Waka/Victoria University, and Maori Education Trust, resulting in tertiary grants awarded by NWEETB being matched by THW and MET through the Taihonoa partnership programme.   
To be eligible, you must be enrolled at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and must submit your scholarship application prior to the closing date of this grant.

3.  Documents required: (you cannot submit your application if any of your documents are missing)
  • Whakapapa Sheet Verified, including Marae validation (new applicants must supply)
  • Enrolment Confirmation (clearly showing current year’s course, study status, number of papers etc)
  • Fees Receipt (showing your fees have been PAID; study link entitlement advice is acceptable)
  • Academic Record (clearly showing your progress-past year/s results in continued programme).  PhD students in Year 2 or higher of their PhD programme to also provide supervisor's brief report on progress.
  • Student ID (your current Student ID card)
  • Bank Account Verification (verifying your account number entered online)
4.  Penalties.   CHECK your documents carefully.

Your application may be declined if you do not provide all required supporting documents clearly showing the information required.
       - (At the Board’s discretion) If a request has to be made for any clarifying information or documents, you will have a penalty of 15% imposed on any grant that may be payable.
